Legal Recruiting Through The Eyes Of The Recruited
So, you are contacted frequently by any number of headhunters or legal recruiters: How do you know which one to use or to believe? It is overwhelming unless you have a person who is interested in actually helping you find your ideal position and not just in the end result – the Placement Fee Payday. Of course, there is that, but it is not the ultimate payment for Nancy Grimes. For her, it is the opportunity for relationship building and watching out for your, or in this case, my best interest.
Nancy has a unique approach. First, she takes the time to learn about and understand you. Not only the positions you might be interested in or what is on your resume, but your aspirations, concerns, and priorities. Then, Nancy teaches you how to be your most marketable. In some cases, this may hinge on current market demands, but in my case, it involved identifying and capitalizing on my core strengths. When we first spoke, she candidly told me that she didn’t have the optimal position for me at her fingertips, so she leveraged her contacts, organized a customized search based on my unique skill set, and found an employer looking for someone exactly like me.
Nancy seems to have the greater sense that if she places people with what makes them happy, then it enhances the quality of the relationship and it goes to establishing trust and creditability. This is not the only way that Nancy distinguishes herself from other good recruiters – what also separates her from the many is that she works with you to evaluate your goals and determine if you are aiming too high or too low. In my case, Nancy thought I should aim higher, and I had doubts, but then she proved it! For me, that resulted in an opportunity to bring my expertise, my style and approach, and my business interests together all into one opportunity with Hinman Howard & Kattell.
Nancy did not simply introduce me to Hinman Howard & Kattell. Nancy went above and beyond – she helped me draft and review emails and spent time prepping for and debriefing after each meeting. Most impressive to me was Nancy’s flexibility and willingness to work hard. She understood that I was balancing the demands of my current job and family obligations, so she worked around my schedule. She took 10pm calls from me and was highly responsive to my emails. I have not met another recruiter with her commitment and follow through. Nancy views both the employer and candidate as her client and seeks to create a win-win situation – a mutually beneficial relationship. She is known for her longevity of placements, many who have stayed with the same organization, several who’ve become managing partners or heads of practice units. In all cases – a great representation of her long term philosophy – give both her clients (employer and candidate) what they want and need. I would not hesitate to work with Nancy again and highly recommend that you do so!
